When you are in Bakersfield, the Kern County Museum is one of the absolute must-go places. The museum spreads over a beautifully landscaped 16-acre site. It is home to around 60 historic buildings which reflect the culture and history of the county all the way back to the 19th century.
With so many historic buildings from the 19th century, you literally walk into the century when taking a tour of the museum. Here you will find reflections of the life as it was in the century, cultural artifacts of the time, the architecture and houses built in the period and a lot more. On-site buildings included within the museum include a church, a schoolhouse, a courthouse, a train station and a photography studio. The museum also exhibits the oil industry of California and its history. On display is a wooden oil derrick that was used at the turn of the century. ‘Black Gold: The Oil Experience’ is a large exhibit that is hosted over more than 9000 square feet. The exhibit shows the equipment, machinery and history of oil exploration and mining in the county and the state. Nearly a million historic and cultural objects are housed in the museum. These are displayed throughout the museum buildings. This is a children’s museum which lets kids get more hands-on with various interesting exhibits. Included within the museum grounds is the actual home of the country music legend Herle Haggard. This home was originally constructed by repurposing a 1910 refrigerator railroad car and offers a very unique experience. Another attraction at the museum is the Aeron Energy Gallery with its interesting exhibits. Located close by is the gift shop where you can get a cool souvenir to mark your visit to the museum. Starting this year, the museum is also home to ‘Village Flea.’ This is a family-friendly marketplace where you can find amazing objects like vintage art, collectibles, furnishings for your home and more.
